Science Week 2023 has arrived with a thought-provoking challenge: What does it mean to be human in today's world and how will our decisions impact future generations? As we contemplate the role of science in shaping our collective human experience, it is essential to engage children in the wonders of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics). Here are three exciting STEM activities for preschool children, allowing them to explore their creativity and curiosity while fostering an understanding of the world around them.

Activity 1: The Magic of Nature - Plant Growth Experiment

Objective:

This activity not only introduces children to the world of biology but also helps them understand the importance of taking care of our planet and the environment. It is the perfect time of the year to engage in this activity.

Materials:

- Small potted plants or seeds

- Soil

- Small pots or cups

- Watering can or spray bottle

- Sunlight

Procedure:

1. Let the preschoolers choose their favourite plant or seeds and plant them in small pots or cups.

2. Explain the importance of sunlight, water, and care for plant growth.

3. Encourage the children to water their plants regularly and place them in a sunny spot.

4. Let children feel the soil’s texture, compare different seed sizes and colours, and discuss the different caring needs for each specimen.

5. As they watch their plants grow, discuss how taking care of the environment is essential for both the current and future generations.

Activity 2: Space Adventure - DIY Solar System Mobile

Objective:

This activity will spark curiosity about the universe and encourage children to think about the possibilities of space exploration.

Materials:

- Recycled Cardboard (for planets)

- Strings

- Glue

- Scissors

- Markers or crayons

Procedure:

1. Help children cut out planets from the cardboard and have them colour/paint them as realistically or creatively as they like.

2. Attach strings to each planet and hang them in your classroom or make a mobile.

3. As you hang the mobile, explain the names of the planets and some interesting facts about our solar system.

4. Encourage them to ask questions about space and explore their curiosity about the universe.

5. Engage in a “space exploration” role-play activity where children imagine hopping into a rocket (using classroom chairs or creating their own spaceship with cardboard boxes) and visit each planet. Ask children to describe what they would find on each planet and to describe the conditions: if it would be hot or cold, if there is water, etc.

Activity 3: Super Senses - A Sensory Science Experience

Objective:

This activity focuses on the senses and how they shape our understanding of the world. It also highlights the importance of science in expanding our knowledge.

Materials:

- Various textured objects (e.g., sandpaper, fabric, aluminium foil, feathers)

- Objects with different scents (e.g., flowers, fruits)

- Small containers

Procedure:

1. Place the textured objects and scented items in small containers.

2. Ask children to close their eyes and have them touch, smell, and explore each item one by one.

3. Encourage them to describe their experiences and discuss how their senses help them understand the world.

4. Explain how science helps us understand our senses and discover new things.

These three STEM activities aim to foster creativity, curiosity, and a deeper connection to the world around them. Science Week 2023 challenges us to think about the impact of our decisions on future generations. By engaging our youngest minds in STEM, we are paving the way for a brighter future where science plays a pivotal role in shaping our collective human experience. Through these activities, we can inspire the next generation to be curious, creative, and compassionate stewards of our planet and the ever-evolving world of science.
