This is a busy training week for the Canavan Byrne Training Department. Eóin is visiting two services to deliver Fire Safety and Manual Handling training to over 50 staff members.
At Canavan Byrne, we offer onsite Manual Handling and Fire Safety Awareness training. We also offer both of these courses as self-paced eLearning courses. With the Manual Handling  eLearning course, you are required to complete a lift assessment over Zoom so that we con confirm that you have been instructed to lift correctly.
Working in an Early Years or School Age Care environment is a physically demanding job. You are constantly performing manual handling activities, including: Lifting children, lifting play equipment, lifting kitchen equipment, and so on. The consequences of poor manual handling techniques cannot be underestimated. Employees can suffer injury that can lead to severe pain and prolonged absence at work.
Our clients renew their Manual Handling Certificates every 3 years. However, it is natural that bad habits develop, and given the consequences, we would like to remind you of the most important aspect of good manual handling: Bend your legs and not your back. Muscles in the back are not designed to support external loads; they are designed to support posture. Do you ever wonder why weight lifters in the Olympics avoid injury? The answer is that they utilise the muscles in their legs, not their back. Please keep your back straight at all times when performing manual handling activities. This will help you to avoid injury and the negative consequences injury brings.
