Documenting and Recording Children's Learning in Early Years Settings

Observation is about watching and listening to children’s expressions, actions and behaviours. It requires a sensitive and respectful approach to each child’s activity.  More importantly, it requires an attitude of openness, with little expectation of what you might observe about the child. The purpose of observation is also to build the relationship through developing and retaining the practitioner’s interest in the child and to reflect on and refine their approach’. (Manning-Morton & Marlen, 2020).

Observation in the early years is an important area of assessment. However, it can be a daunting task for many educators as there is no fixed method for performing observations. This webinar will guide educators through different observation techniques, help them interpret observations to understand children’s development and how to use these for future planning.
