Young children need Early Years Educators and services who understand the impact trauma can have on their development and functioning and who respond to their needs using a trauma-aware approach.

This webinar is for those working in Early Years Education (practitioners and managers) who are interested in learning about the impact of trauma and adversity on young children.

Course Content

This practical 2 hour webinar will provide an introduction to the following topics:
  • Trauma and adverse experiences in early childhood.
  • The impact of trauma on the young child’s developing brain, functioning and interactions with others.
  • Applying a ‘trauma-aware lens’ when considering children’s behaviour.
  • The importance of key relationships in responding to trauma. 
  • Simple strategies to respond to and support children who have experienced trauma.
  • The importance of self-care.

 With a BA in Psychology, an MA in Play Therapy and additional qualifications in Filial Therapy and Coaching, Sarah Rush is a very experienced and skilled Practitioner and Play Therapist.  
Sarah has worked with children and families for over 30 years in the early years sector, in private practice as a Play Therapist and as a Practitioner in Social Care settings (Family Support Services). In addition, she facilitates training for early years educators and practitioners.
Sarah’s knowledge of and extensive direct work experience contribute to a keen understanding of the needs and challenges faced by vulnerable children and families.  She brings a child-centred but realistic perspective to the practitioners' ‘on the ground’ experience, and has a particular interest in trauma-informed practice. 
Understanding the impact of trauma is essential for creating nurturing and responsive early years environments. This practical two-hour webinar offers an introduction to trauma awareness, exploring how early adverse experiences can affect a child’s development, behaviour, and relationships. Participants will gain insight into how trauma influences the developing brain, how to view behaviour through a trauma-aware lens, and the vital role of strong, supportive relationships. The session also offers simple, effective strategies for supporting children who have experienced trauma—alongside a focus on the importance of self-care for those working in early years settings.
