Introduction to Play Therapy
In Play Therapy, children enter into a dynamic relationship with a trained Play Therapist in which they can express, explore and make sense of their difficult and painful life experiences. Using play as the principle means of communication, the child and the Play Therapist work together in a counseling space called a playroom, which is equipped with specially chosen toys to encourage the expression of feelings and support the development of healthier behaviours.
In the first part of this workshop, participants will be introduced to the principles, types, and use of Play Therapy with a focus on Non-Directive Play Therapy. The second part will introduce participants to the practice skills of empathic responding and understanding and working with children’s play themes, skills that can be used to emotionally support young children in the Early Years settings.
